Hot Tofu

A senior capstone project for a pilot of a 4-episode docuseries called Hot Tofu, where hosts explore immigrant-owned restaurants in Vancouver.

Hot Tofu is a heartfelt exploration of the immigrant experience in Metro Vancouver, told through the lens of food, culture, and entrepreneurship. The idiom "Hasty people don’t get to eat hot
tofu" (心急吃不了热豆腐) serves as a metaphor for the immigrant journey, which demands patience and perseverance. Since tofu retains heat and can easily burn the mouth if eaten too quickly, the saying suggests that rushing into things without proper preparation often leads to undesirable results. Just as handling hot tofu requires care, building a new life in a foreign country is a slow, deliberate process. Immigrants must navigate unfamiliar systems, establish businesses, and rethink their identities, all while holding onto their heritage. The path is filled with challenges, such as language barriers, financial hardships, and the emotional weight of starting over. But like a well-prepared dish, the effort put into the process is what makes the
outcome meaningful. The cooking process itself reflects the immigrant journey that involves the careful selection of ingredients, slow marination, and the patience required before taking the first bite. In the same way, fulfillment in a new country is not instant, but the result of time, adaptation, and perseverance. And just like freshly boiled hot tofu, the rewards of that journey remain rich and enduring.
